Nintendo Ending Wi-Fi Connection Service For DS And Wii May 20th

Nintendo has confirmed that certain online functionality, including online play, matchmaking and leaderboards for many Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games, will no longer be accessible. The service will be closing on 20th May 2014 worldwide.

The service’s retirement will affect 20 Nintendo published Wii games and Wii Ware titles, including Animal Crossing: Let’s Go to the City, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and Pokémon Battle Revolution. More than 40 Nintendo published DS and DSi software titles will also be affected, such as Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Pokémon Platinum Version, Professor Layton and the Curious Village and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. The full list of titles are available on the official Nintendo of Australia website

        1. nobody does this, they have servers, they don’t need to invest further in those servers, they own them….if they can’t have servers with 5 people up and running, well then they have no idea what year we are in, ps3 and xbox 360 have huge servers with millions of players and will not close them for a long time

        2. I still play Smash all the time! :{
This freakin sux! ;[ And i love how they just simply say online is turning off and just walk away. -_-‘
This reminds of how they shut down Flipnote Studio and promised to reward us with Flipnote S. 3D…. ( and we still dont have it -__-” )
          .
The shut down is 10 days before the release of Mario Kart 8… its kinda obvious what they are doing now… they want people to panic that their online is GONE FOREVER, then buy the WiiU… this is a good (for them) yet desperate way to sell units.
And lets not forget that DS games are coming to WiiU’s Virtual Console… i probably wont buy them because there wont be any online play.

          1. I believe that they’re doing it to have more servers for their current games.

And if they are doing it as a marketing strategy, I think at this point it’s justified.

      1. It’s smart to do this for Mario Kart a week before Mario Kart 8 is released as it could be the boot in the arse some people need to buy a Wii U. They need to focus on Wii U and 3DS instead of those plus Wii, DS and DSi.

    1. Might as well stop supporting the old nintendo wifi and focus entirely on Nintendo Network. There’s only one thing that bugs me about this and that’s Dragon Quest X, the mmo we never got. IT’s not even that old and I know it came out for wii and wiiu in japan. Those that got the wii version are screwed.

      1. Yeah, I was thinking ouch too soon for allot of these games. Mario Kart Wii was still a seller during the Christmas season.

      2. If someone had a Wii U, would they still be able to play their Mario Kart Wii online matches using that console, or will this shutdown affect those as well?

    1. Not to mention that its past time to start telling people that Wii U is a brand new gaming system that’s clearly not an add-on, that it exists and more great titles like Mario Kart 8 is coming soon.

    1. Wow. You’re such a wise fortune teller and by “wise”, I mean the same league as Michael Patcher..you know, the big mouth douchebag playing human crystal ball who’s anti-Nintendo “analysis” is, was and always have been proven wrong.

Seriously, stop wasting time being a smartass. Its not good for your social health.

    2. Weak U are son. Weak U are. As weak as the condom I used on your mother. That’s why your birth certificate is an apology letter from Trojan.

  1. No, NO, NOOOOOO!!!
I can’t even play the last days of Mario Kart DS and Pokemon SoulSilver online because my internet’s security! :(

  2. People who complain about Mario Kart Wii and DS, you can go on Mario Kart 7 and go online right now, Pokemon, yeah, it’s bad the old Pokemon games are getting cut too, but now you can go and play Pokemon X and Y with a WAY better online.

So, go play Mario Kart 7 and Pokemon X and Y for your online after this, and you still have 2 months and Mario Kart 8 is coming 10 days after that.

      1. Are you kidding? Mario Kart 7 is awesome online. Mario Kart Wii sucked since people hacked the crap out of it. Mario Kart DS sucked because everyone snaked. Good riddance I say.

    1. Think about what system those games are for, then re-read the headline of this article. For the sake of mankind, I hope you find your answer

  3. Idiotic. So you’re telling me that when DS games go onto the Virtual Console, like Mario Kart DS, Pokemon, ect, I won’t be able to play online with them?! That takes away a MAJOR selling point for buying those games again.

    1. When they are on virtual console, they will be using the Wii U servers. That’s assuming they leave the online portions a part of the game. Since they have to mod the game for virtual console (all those fancy menus and control customizations), I’m sure they can mod the online section to use the Wii U servers.

    1. ^This. If there’s an online service they should keep, it should be Mario Kart Wii. And Super Smash Bros. Brawl, until SSB4 releases.

  4. Ha! Goodbye, Project Massive failure.

Who knew you’d be wasting your time modding Brawl…

Oh wait… I did know that.

  5. Question: If I play my Wii games on the Wii Mode on Wii U, can I still access the online features in the game, since technically I’m using my Wii U?

    1. No. Because the Wii games are programmed to access certain servers which those same servers will be taken down so the answer is no.

  6. This seriously sucks! WTF man, there were still quite a few rather active communities, like Mario Kart Wii, Pokemon 5th gen or smash….Should have waited a year, or half a year at least :(

  7. Well the Wii is about 8 years old… and the games range from 5-7 years.
Cant say you didn’t see this coming after they shut down the other services. Although it does suck. SSBB online kind of sucks at this point. Nobody would fight you. every one would kill themselves or just sit there jumping and if you tried to attack them, they’d all try and jump you. plus the lag was just terrible.

Mario Kart Wii was fun. but seeing as though these services end on the 20th of may. 11 days from the release of MK8 it shouldn’t be a problem unless you have to buy a Wii U
as for the DS versions. MK7 is out so I wouldnt be concerned about the handheld online service

    1. MK Wii WAS fun.. before everyone started just hacking the game and spamming blue shells and auto finishing first. Glad they are ending it as online hasnt been enjoyable for years now.

Project M will be missed though.

      1. Now people like this piss me off, as they’re the main reason hackers still hack. You people STAY in the room KNOWING they’re hacking to win, and even when it’s so obvious you STILL STAY IN THE ROOM, thus supporting the hacker.

I guarantee that if everyone dropped out the moment hackers showed themselves, there wouldn’t be that many hackers. That’s how I played. The moment hackers joined, I dropped out at the end of the race. (To loose less VR than the amount you loose in last via cutting your connection).

  8. Why is everyone complaining? It’s too bad, in a sense, but this is completely necessary. They need to stop peddling the Wii and the DS to get those still playing the old systems to jump on board with the new system. With Mario Kart 8 coming out 10 days later, the news generated from shutting down the servers along with the (hopeful) Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle could go a long way towrd moving units. I still think that Nintendo made a big mistake with the Wii mini this past holiday season because it added to the confusion between Wii and Wii U. Hopefully this will help close the door on the past gen and bring people on board in the new generation.

    1. The Wii console in general should’ve retired on day one of Wii U followed by its online service closure. DS however should earn an extension because of its continued popularity today.

Wii Mini is indeed a stupid mistake and probably a notice of Wii’s fate.

      1. Say what!?!?! The DS has a “continued popularity”? Looks at the 100 Million Wii’s still out there, and it’s continuing sales even to this day.

  9. I don’t get how is any of this gonna help DS digital resale when it lands on Wii U and possibly 3DS and future consoles too when its online service is cut. Its gonna cost those software sales and units a lot more than they think.

It would be wise to continue online play for popular games like Smash Bros., Mario Kart and Pokemon which the old titles are still vastly played to this day. Keep those running for another few years before notifying people to move on to newer gaming experiences.

    1. Those titles are still playable locally, which short be more than enough at this point in time. If they are serious about saving the Wii U, they need to pool their resources appropriately, which means cutting ties with the old system. There will surely be plenty of people who pass on getting a Wii U for the Mario Kart 8 because they have the Wii version that is still playable online. If you take the online play away, it gives them more incentive to upgrade. Makes perfect sense to me.

      1. It does, yet at the same time it very much doesn’t. See, I still question whether I should get the Wii U or not, considering how fast Nintendo shuts down online on it’s own highly successfull titles that are still massively played to this day (MK Wii, Brawl).

I say online support should continue to go on during at least 1/2 of this gen’s lifespan. Is keeping their servers up for these few titles really that much of a money drainer for them??

        Very disappointed.

        1. I understand where you’re coming from, and they may have been willing to do that if the Wii U wasn’t on life support (at best) right now. They botched many things with the transition from the Wii to the Wii U. unfortunately, cutting all ties with the previous generation may be the only way to fix the current. I’m still disappointed in Nintendo in so many ways, but this is going to be one of those necessary evils if they want the system to last.

      1. Yeah I know but I’ve been trying to get shiny legendaries for years and still need loads from Black 2. Also I need Kyogre from Sapphire and the 3 birds from FireRed and it’s nice to know I can get them one day and then clone them where as in gen 4-5 I can’t now, unless I succeed in cloning in gen 6 it might be ok. However this has me thinking that a few years down the line they might stop pokemon bank, then where will we be.

  10. They took it too far this time. So they’re taking away Pokémon 5th gen? And MarioKart Wii?

I mean: i could’ve just argued about Prime:Hunters being no longer available to be played online (that game ROCKS and still has a great amount of both pro and amateur players having fights via wifi, which is sweet. Plus there isn’t any other similar option out there), but let’s just stick to the other two I mentionned.

TAKING DOWN LAST HOLIDAYS’ BESTSELLERS’ ONLINE MODE?

    What the actual FUCK?

    1. Agreed. But from the sound of the statement quoted on the Kotaku news release, the decision to shut it down seems pretty confident. :/

  11. I haven’t played Brawl online (or played it at all…) since a few months after it was released – online play was horribly laggy and broken. Not sure if it ever got better, but Nintendo still needs to up their game with their online content and infrastructure.

  12. And this is why I prefer game developers to focus more on offline experiences than online. It always has to end someday. I’ll miss Mario Kart Wii online, but I’ll still be playing its local multiplayer 20 years down the line. I do think this comes a couple years too soon for the Wii but there you go.

    1. Dump it via USB Loader and load er’ up on Dolphin w/ Netplay if you have a strong enough system. You’ll have to know people to play though.

  13. Well, I guess it’s time. I do hope for Mario Kart 8 to have the same functionality like in the previous installment, and for the love of jesus, let’s get Sakurai to know to fix the freaking Wi-fi server for Smash bros!!!!!! Everyone is expecting the online multiplayer to work on this one.

    1. You answered your own question. They’re stopping this to encourage fans to upgrade to Wii U and Mario Kart 8. They have to concentrate on Wii U/3DS.

  14. Hope this wont affect the COD games.
I still play them from time to time on my Wii U, and i also want to try the older 2ww cod’s but not if they dont support it.

Or is it only first party?

    1. It’s only for games that used Nintendo’s multiplayer service. If COD uses their own services for multiplayer, they SHOULD be fine, though correct me if I’m wrong.

  15. This is smart to end May 20th. They were probably holding off on ending the services until Mario Kart 8, because there are still tons of people playing Mario Kart Wii.

  16. “Nintendo ending.”

    ALRIGHT! SOME GOOD NEWS!

No, I’m just kidding. With the Nintendo network, it’s pretty pointless to have the Wi-Fi now.

  17. Fucking Nintendo!!! Sony never does this shit. They support their systems for years after a new generation is released. There are way more players for Wii games than there are Wii U games. All Nintendo will do is piss of it’s fans. There are so many Wii games I want to continue to play online and what about the fucking virtual console? That library is SO much larger than the current Wii U virtual console it’s sad. I still buy virtual console games on Wii rather than Wii U because it has more games that I want. Nintendo is too fucking lazy to get all the games up to Wii U virtual console and now they are being cheap closing servers for Wii and DS. They are quickly about to lose one of their biggest fans and supporters. I feel like I have been royally screwed over by them as a consumer these past two year years. Can Nintendo really afford to lose out on suckers like me? I hate the current state of Nintendo. I don’t usually agree with people on this but……..fire Iwata. Fucking bastard.

    1. Nevermind, I guess the virtual console and streaming services will still be available. But I’m still pissed I can’t play Project M online anymore. I still think it’s a bit soon to close the servers on these games. Why is Nintendo so quick hop ship on stuff? Sony isn’t that way. Nintendo really needs to change their business model and be more consumer oriented.

      1. Well, for the “Virtual Console”, though it’ll still be available, I seriously recommend getting a retrode and use Homebrew to play your games. (You can also dump games via the Retrode).

  18. As much as I enjoyed Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii online, I believe it is time to move on. This way, Nintendo can focus on the 3DS and Wii U more and save money on servers. I had awesome times on SSBB and MKwii, though.

  19. c’mon nintendo think of the little kids that dont have xbox’s or ps3’s these little kids enjoy online gaming

  20. Son of a bitch! The Last Story is on this list! D: I haven’t even got all the special dyes! D:< This is why I hate the idea of stuff only being able to be unlocked through online play. Now I have to list this as a con to Mistwalker's The Last Story. *sighs at the fact he'll never be able to 100% complete The Last Story*

  21. I’d think the bigger games like Pokemon would stay online, but whatever. They kinda screwed over Black/White by removing the dream link thing completely. Totally took away a whole aspect of the game.

  22. It’s what Nintendo sees as a last resort effort to get the WiiU and 3DS to sell more, also, some people were raging at Nintendo for being “casual”.

You ordered the soup bitches, now drink it.

  23. Couldn’t they at-least wait for the ALL the squeals to come out. The next smash bros ain’t out yet. Oh, well good time to rip all my wii game to use netplay on dolphin.

  24. Wolfheart Ze Fangirl ♪

Great, now I’m gonna have to buy Professor Layton and the Diobolical Box so I can unlock the downloadable puzzles, PLUS unlock all the other puzzles in the other three games, PLUS unlock all the gifts in London Life with the Last Specter. *sigh*
Better get started. Here I come Professor!
I’m rather neutral on MarioKart DS, the Wi-fi is extremely fun but is also filled with people hacking, cheating, bullying, and posting really…ah…creative profanity as their usernames, which I’m sure discourages younger players. Professor Layton is popular however and I think they should continue to allow us to download the puzzles and exchange gifts as usual…
I am also going to have to save up for a 3DS now, which I’m sure is their point, but still, that’ll take a chunk out of my savings when I finally earn enough. Plus now I’ll have to buy the games for it, too. *groan*
UNLESS… Can you use regular DS games with a 3DS?
