You’re jumping the gun. The mini Dungeons will most likely be vast and varied in size. Just speculation: 5 of them could reflect half-dungeons. 10 could be 1/4 dungeons. and the lesser 80 would be something like secret areas varied in size.
My favorite secret being the Cow in a Cave in Ocarina of Time.

  1. Eh. Majora’s Mask only had 4 dungeons as well. I’m not too worried by this, especially if the mini-dungeons aren’t all the same and are unique enough to stand apart from each other.

    1. Majora’s Mask was rather short, though. The sidequests and collecting masks were the main focus of that game, but if you played only the main story, the game was over rather quickly.

Not to say that Majora’s Mask wasn’t a great game. It’s one of my favorite 3D Zelda’s. I’d still love my main game to be decently long. I hope that some of tose mini-dungeons, if the rumor does end up true, at least contain new items to find and not just rupees or heart containers.

  2. If true, I’m not sure how I feel about it. Focusing on 4 dungeons could be a plus if they’re larger than normal and fully fleshed out. 100+ mini dungeons makes me think of Skyrim though, how you’d find caves and such to explore. Which, for me, ended up becoming boring because they all felt too similar. But they could pull it off if done right. Dynamic weather would obviously be great. And the theme certainly sounds intriguing for a Zelda title.

      1. I tried Witcher 3. Too many cutscenes for my tastes. And I didn’t care for the combat. But if that’s true hopefully Ninty can pull it off similarly with Zelda. I have faith in Aonuma.

            1. Oh. Well hopefully they are helping with it since they have some experience with a massive open world game cuz of XCX.

          1. After looking at a humongous world of Mira in Xenoblade Chronicles X, you’re flawless, King! It’s great to see Nintendo’s other developer, MONOLITHSOFT in assisting Aonuma’s team in developing a new Zelda title first on Wii U. I’m looking forward to this Tuesday’s exclusive hands-on preview of Nintendo’s new titles at high noon (EDT).

  3. Hmm, I was kind of hoping that there would be more than 4 main dungeons…but 100 mini-dungeons sounds like plenty of chances for side quests and exploration.

But, I wonder what exactly do they consider “mini-dungeons”. Would they be as small as the lantern caves in Twilight Princess or the fire and ice isles in Windwaker, or as large as the child dungeons and Under the Well in Ocarina of Time? Maybe a mix of both large and small, but hopefully they’ll be more on the large size and dynamic with puzzles and challenges.

Some of the mini dungeons in the Zelda series and in Skyrim felt barren to me, so hopefully they can find a way to spruce these up, somehow.

    1. Apples in Zelda have been a thing since ALttP; they aren’t exactly uncommon.
And dynamic weather wasn’t always a thing in Zelda, so that’s good news.

And no, it doesn’t sound like a 9 year old came up with this.
You’d have to say that of all games with apples and weather, if you’re saying it about Zelda.XD

  4. Perhaps those mini-dungeons factor into those 4 main dungeons? As in, you can only go so far into the first one, then you find an item you need to progress in one of the minis, and then that helps you get through another mini, and so on and so forth until you get everything you need to finish the first main dungeon. Just my speculation, but I think that makes the dungeon more exciting to get through since you won’t get to do it all in one go.

  5. My hope is someone high in the development team of Zelda U/NX is playing a shitload of Witcher 3 & using that game as a basis for how many of the mini-dungeons, called caves in the game, work. Like you can get a side quest from a notice board that leads you to some of the caves where you find new armor pieces for Link to use that you normally can’t find in the main story locations like they did with Witcher Gear. A fully customizable Link where what you have him wearing can be seen in the game’s many cutscenes would be great. Oh & each cave would look vastly different from each other.

Anyway, I’m more interested in the belief that the game will focus on the idea of technology vs. fantasy. Skyward Sword had a few instances of technology, the robots in Lanayru Province, after all. If they are right, what better place for this game to take place in the timeline than somewhere between Skyward Sword & the Minish Cap?

    1. Haven’t played Witcher 3, but what you described (Link’s current getup is seen in cutscenes) is something I would love to see. Xenoblade Chronicles/XCX did it, why not Zelda?

Zelda is no stranger to introducing technology to its worlds- PH did it with steamboats, ST did it with trains, and SS did it with robots (that have strangely never been seen again despite that game being first in the timeline) and, to a lesser extent, timeshift stones (which is something I dearly want to see return). If tech VS fantasy is a theme, I’m very interested to see where it goes.

      1. If this new Zelda game is indeed a sequel of sorts to Skyward Sword and it is going to deal with technology, it could possibly explain why the robots didn’t show up sooner in the franchise. Maybe technology was banned for some reason because of the events that take place in this new Zelda game.

        1. I’m actually hoping that this takes place AFTER Skyward Sword.
They’ve rediscovered technology via Time Stones and other things like that, and now that the Skyloftians [for lack of a better name for them] have descended to the surface, they’re encountering all of these new monsters and technological threats left behind that are awakening in response to the Triforce descending with them.
The story could go through why technology isn’t in future Zelda’s via trying to stop whatever is behind its rise in this new one.

      2. Oh & I definitely suggest playing Witcher 3 if you can. The story alone is worth it. It’s like a visual novel but with actual gameplay.

    1. Maybe you need to revisit them from time to time? I remember you had to return to Skyview Temple about halfway through Skyward Sword to get fresh fairy water (or something) in order to move on; not only that, but the layout changed enough so you couldn’t just blaze through it- you had to find a new path.

I won’t minding having to go back to certain dungeons as long as it isn’t the same thing twice… or thrice… or four times… (lookin’ at you, Phantom Hourglass) and as long as the return is justified.

      1. Like how in Metroid when you backtrack to certain areas, new, stronger enemies are waiting there for you. :D

  6. YES! Finally trickles of information on the game I’ve been cravvving. I love it all! Even if…it is….n’t..confirmed.

I think it could work out just fine, if the plan is to have four main Dungeon’s, then make them big and a challenge to work through, I know Zelda titles have that. But I wouldn’t mind a scale up in difficulty. I’m hella stoked!

  7. The dungeons were always my favorite part about Zelda. From ALTTP, all the way to Skyward Sword. I like how fleshed out they are, the puzzles, the items, and the boss’s. True the boss’s are easy once you know how to defeat them, but it was always a blast figuring each boss out for the first time. If there are only 4 main dungeons in the next Zelda I will be thoroughly disappointed. Mini dungeons or not, 4 main dungeons would be very disappointing, especially in comparison to how big the world is.

  8. And the standard number of dungeons in Zelda keeps getting lower with each new installment. To me, 8 is the bare minimum. Wind Waker, Minish Cap and Majora felt like rush jobs, and while I appreciate them for bringing some new elements to the franchise, I don’t like them as much as the original, A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening or even Twilight Princess due to their low dungeon count.

If this is true, I’m expecting the worst: a big open-world with nothing to do in it. And if those mini-dungeons are just like the holes in the ground in Ocarina and Wind Waker, I’ll have Aonuma’s head on a pike.

    1. ALTTP had like 13 dungeons. I don’t know why ever since the count has gone down despite newer games being on more powerful systems. It’s always upset me even though I do love most the new Zeldas.

      1. That’s exactly the example I had in mind. Even Link’s Awakening, a GB game, had at least 8 dungeons, if memory serves. I can’t see this as anything but laziness by their part, especially when taking into acount that the game was originally planned for 2015.

  9. this sounds super fake, there is no way a game like this would only have 4 main dungeons, because in that position, how the hell will we be able to get enough items for the game, 100 mini dungeons sounds like the fakest thing ever, and if nintendo is actually doing that, im actually quitting zelda because nintendo is dying out, they dont really understand why people play zelda games, or atleast classic fans, i played the games for their story, for their overworld, for their mystery, and thats why i hate people that go around spreading rumors that sound super fake, how the hell would there be 100 mini dungeons, and if each mini dungeons is the size of a child dungeon in OoT, then they would need items, and im quite sure that there is no way the game has 100 items, dont get me wrong on the whole 4 dungeons thing, majoras mask has four dungeons but its literally my seconds favorite zelda game ever, but in that game, 4 main dungeons were enough, because the overworld was small, the game was focusing on making it look like you cant run away, the moon will always be behind you, but if in zelda u they would have 4 dungeons, then how the hell would the overworld be that huge? where would the feeling of exploration go, i dont want to go around for hours only to find hundreds of tini dungeons that probably take 1 to 2 minutes to finish, the entire idea of there only being 4 main dungeons disgusts me for some reason, it worked up seriously well in majoras mask, but i dont think its gonna work for a game with one of the biggest overworlds in gaming history, i know this rant is very long, but i just cant stand these people who spread rumors right before a games complete unveiling, it just makes me feel like they are trolling.

    1. Ok, quality over quantity huh? So let’s just have one single dungeon then? It will be then highest quality dungeon you have ever seen! Sounds fun right?

Truth is, everything Nintendo does is quality, so the phrase “quality over quantity” doesn’t relate to them. Since quality is a given, ask for more quantity. Then you get the best of both worlds. A console Zelda needs 8 dungeons. Plain and simple.

  12. 4 is really small even if you have 100 mini dungeons. Aonuma-san always say the new zelda will be inspired from skyrim and I won’t be surprise if the game has a short story and lot of mini quest like xenoblade chronicle X.

To be honest I am not a fan of this type of formula where the main story is short, you have 1000 of mini quests/stories and the world is so huge it takes you 2 hours to go from one end to another. If that Zelda following that formula i will be disappointed.

    1. Witcher 3’s big, open world with a long story & side quests where the side stories for those actually matter because you end up caring about the characters the side stories are about and Zelda’s combat is what I want. I’d mention puzzles but both games have some pretty well thought out puzzles in them so that goes without saying. But if this ends up like Twilight Princess, I expect Skyrim as well. :/ Too bad Witcher 3 didn’t come out before 2015. Or maybe Zelda U got delayed in 2015 because of how much better Witcher 3’s overworld & story is compared to Skyrim’s. One can hope, anyway.
